GTE serves the Kearney area with some of the most sophisticated telecommunications services currently available. In addition to a GTD-5 central office, a DMS 100 switch was installed recently which provides digital voice, data and video (ISDN) services.

Additionally, an AT&T point of presence and fibre optic cable are available. Installation and maintenance personnel are located in Kearney. Long distance carriers include: AT&T, All Net Dial One Service, Sprint Dial One Service, Metro Media Communications, Wiltel, Inc., Telecom USA, MCI, Sprint Hospitality Group, Oncor, and LDDS.

The City of Kearney has established a Technology Learning Center in the Kearney Public Library which provides free access to computer and related equipment. Interns are available to help people who may be unfamiliar with the equipment as well as make referrals to local computer user groups. Local businesses have donated time, funding and equipment to make the TLC an ongoing success.

The Community Networking Institute was created in 1994 to build local capacity to understand and use computers for community development. The goal is to create a virtual community, with Kearney serving as a hub of computer users throughout the region.
